About the Project

ARRICE (African Regional Resilience Initiative on Climate Education) is a four-year regional project (2024–2028) coordinated by the Office for Climate Education (OCE) with the support of the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) and a network of regional and international partners.

The project aims to promote and reinforce climate change education in three African countries Mauritius, Senegal, and Kenya by empowering schools, teachers, and students with the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to understand climate challenges and act for a more sustainable future.

In Mauritius, the project will be jointly implemented by the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) and Reef Conservation, combining pedagogical expertise with field-based environmental experience to strengthen climate education both in classrooms and in real-world learning environments.

Africa is among the regions most vulnerable to climate change, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions. Rising temperatures, droughts, heatwaves, and biodiversity loss are already affecting livelihoods, deepening inequalities, and particularly impacting women and young people.

In this context, climate change education remains insufficiently developed. ARRICE seeks to bridge this gap by positioning education as a key driver of climate resilience, adaptation, and innovation for future generations.

Our Approach

ARRICE is built around four strategic action areas:

  • Pedagogical Resources

Development and adaptation of contextualised, locally relevant educational materials on climate change.

  • Teacher Training

Strengthening teachers’ capacities through active, participatory, and learner-centred teaching methods.

  • Community Engagement

Encouraging student-led initiatives and community-based climate projects that connect learning to real-life action in Mauritius, this will include coastal and marine-focused learning led by Reef Conservation.

  • Public Policy Support

Working with education authorities including the Mauritius Institute of Education to integrate climate education sustainably into national curricula and policies.
